Staying Heart Healthy at Mulgoa Valley

Mulgoa Valley FC prioritizes player safety. Learn how the MAFACARI II study helps our Masters footballers stay heart-healthy on and off the pitch.

At Mulgoa Valley Football Club, we love the passion our Masters players bring to the pitch every weekend. Football is a fantastic way to stay active, build social connections, and maintain physical fitness well into our later years. However, recent insights from the Masters Football and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Study (MAFACARI II) remind us that as we age, we must be just as committed to our heart health as we are to our team’s performance. Research indicates that while regular exercise is incredibly beneficial, Masters-aged players (35+) face unique cardiovascular risks. Studies have shown that cardiac risk factors are common in this demographic, and many players may not fully recognize the warning signs of a potential cardiac event. The MAFACARI II study highlights that while we are great at showing up for training, we often overlook the importance of proactive health screenings and recognizing subtle symptoms. At Mulgoa Valley FC, we want to ensure our community stays safe. This means more than just warming up before a match; it means staying informed about your own health. We encourage all our players to keep up with regular blood pressure and cholesterol checks. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of having AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) accessible at games and ensuring our members are trained in CPR. We are proud to be part of the Nepean Football Association, which continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of all its participants. Whether you are a competitive player or just here for the social game, your health is the most important part of the match. Let’s look out for one another on and off the field. If you experience any unusual symptoms during or after a game, don’t brush it off—seek medical advice. By staying educated and proactive, we can keep enjoying the beautiful game for many seasons to come. Let’s keep the heart of our club beating strong!
